Shadows of your dog: New Labour, New Brel

September 6, 2008

Being in the wrong continent for this kind of thing, I wouldn’t have known about a Radio 4 programme on Jacques Brel, presented (of course) by Alastair Campbell. I wouldn’t, had it not been for the good man Kieran, that is.

Campbell’s unsatisfactory conclusion: “It’s deep stuff“.

Let me then write an imagined history song — a dramatic monologue by Alastair Campbell, listening to Brel in 1996 and deciding under the influence of Jacques to shape a very different type of New Labour party.

    Deep stuff, indeed

Not quite what you had in mind, but I had a shot at doing a Brelian (?) take on AC at http://www.tomlennon.com/2008/09/alastair-campbell-plays-songs-of.html

    (to the tune of Jacky)

And when they say things I don’t like
I’ll bash them senseless with a pike
Just ask The Guardian’s Michael White
And he will tell you Who’s the Daddy

Oh, you got there before me! Marvelous stuff.
