Coastal Erosion #1: Whitby

I’ve made my opinion on seaside towns quite clear in the past, but just to restate: seaside towns exhibit an aesthetics of erosion, whether it be geographical, cultural, meteorological, sensory… I like the sense of something wearing away at the margins of a culture. Three years ago I wrote about Seaside Surrealism, which was England’s only real example of Surrealism, and the point at which the homely met the unhomely.

Here’s what I saw last week in Whitby:
