Say Yes

For the last few weeks I’ve been krapping myself.

That’s to say, like the protagonist of Beckett’s famous techno-drama, I’ve been listening in on tapes fetched back from the archives — in this case, tapes of music made about ten years ago.

Fortunately, the tapes aren’t just by me. The better parts of them are by my two musical brothers, and I’ll share a few gems on here.

Here’s a piece called Say Yes, made by Jonny Opinion. Something that’s obvious now, listening back, is Jonny’s tendency to switch between very busy and wordful, language-filled sandwiches of songs, and eerily, obstinately basic lyrics. Say Yes is of the latter kind. Jonny tended to use fairly horrible cheap cassettes, which turned out to be a good move, because these tape have degraded much faster. The slightly warped sound of this recording has become very much part of the piece.
