An old haunt

August 16, 2010

A quick nod in the direction of the recently establish communal “hauntological dumping ground”, the Found Objects blog. Now isn’t the time to go fully into the ins and out of hauntological (re)visitations of the past, and why this is emphatically not the same as “retro” cultural regurgitation – these points are really part of a much longer ongoing project that I’m still chipping away at. What I will say, though, is that the fragments paraded on Found Objects by the blog’s impressive list of contributors perfectly capture the sense of a “haunt” as a familiar environment, a habitat even – which is related to the conflation of homely/unhomely cultural remnants that I tend to be preoccupied. I’m especially interested in the proposed collection of pictures of closed-down Woolworths shops, from which I’ve nicked the photo above.
